GDASTD always looks to support our members in their career development and that includes their educational pursuits. At our October 2011 meeting, we heard from Susan Chen who is pursuing her doctorate at Wayne State University. Her research is focused on identifying the competencies required to be successful in the area of Web Based Training/Instruction. If you have experience in this field, please read the attached announcement for more information about how to participate. We thank you in advance for your support.
GDASTD Member & Doctoral Student Calls for Research Volunteers
Begins Oct/Nov 2011
Are you experienced in Web Based Instruction/Training? Are you working or have you worked in the design and development of such instruction/training? If your answer is “Yes”, you may be able to participate in a research study designed to identify the competencies of expert Web Based Instruction designers.
This research consists of two parts: interview and online survey. The interview, taking about one hour, web or face-to-face, is the most crucial part because the competency list will be determined from the interview results. The compiled list will thus become the online survey questions for the participants to rate the importance and frequency of the use. You will participate in either the interview or the survey.
By participating you will not only contribute to the knowledge of instructional design and development, you will also have chance to hear what other professionals are thinking – participants who complete either the interview or the survey will be provided with the research results which could have a positive impact on your own professional practice.
Please read carefully the criteria for participants of this study. If you meet all the criteria, you are very much needed! Contact the researcher directly – her name and email are listed below.
CRITERIA for the expert population (all numbers below are accumulative, and you do not have to work exclusively on WBI/WBT):
- With at least ten years work experience in instructional design including five years specialized in WBI
- Was or is a Lead Instructional Designer or Developer in WBI projects for at least three years
- The WBI projects you participated in those three years must be fully Web delivered courses

The contact email of the researcher is Susan Yonghui Chen at ad1874@wayne.edu
They will accommodate your need for convenient time and location. Your participation will be confidential. Any questions and clarifications will be answered promptly.
Your volunteering is greatly appreciated. Please share with colleagues as appropriate, without enough participants, the study can’t be fulfilled.
Thank you for participating!
